Zhang Zhifeng, Deputy Director of the Marine Ecology and Environment Department at China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), announced in Beijing on the 28th that the nation’s marine ecological environment continued to witness improvement in 2023. The proportion of nearshore areas with excellent water quality has reached 85%, marking a “sixth consecutive increase” since 2018.

Zhang highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in promoting marine ecological environment protection, leading to significant progress. Key areas received focused attention, implementing coordinated governance to holistically manage marine regions.

In 2023, the average concentration of total nitrogen in controlled river sections entering the sea decreased by 12.2% compared to the previous year. Among the 283 bays nationwide, 126 bays exhibited enhancements in water quality compared to the preceding three-year average.

Coastal provinces, regions, and cities in China have identified and surveyed over 53,000 sewage discharge outlets into the sea to date,, rectifying more than 16,000 of them.
