A survey carried out by the Beijing Environmental Education Center has found that air pollution levels remain the most pertinent environmental issue for Beijingers (90.2%), ahead of overall city cleanliness (88.3%) and water quality (84.7%). As to the cause of air pollution, 91.4% of Beijingers see vehicle emissions as the main culprit, followed by emisions from burning fossil fuels (78.7.5), dust pollutants from factories (56.4%) and emissions from food and beverage outlets (39.2%). More than half of those surveyed are also in favour of an environmental tax on residents, with 16.4% strongly in favour, 33.7% less so, and 6.6% strongly against the proposition.

Awareness of PM2.5 has also increased greatly, with 85.5% of those surveyed understanding its significance, in contrast to the 24.2% a year ago.
