  • New project selects model villages for rural revitalization effort

To better promote rural revitalization in China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) is looking to select “hundreds of counties, thousands of townships and ten thousand villages” for its rural revitalization demonstration effort.

The demonstration project is a response to the requirements of the “Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on the Key Work of Promoting Rural Revitalization Comprehensively in 2022”.

The project aims to establish rural revitalization demonstration counties, model towns and model villages at different levels to lead the further development of rural revitalization in other areas.

The project is designed to emphasize differences. The MARA urges local governments to take into account the characteristics of local conditions, resources, industrial bases, and more to determine the goals and tasks that are best suited to their various counties and villages in the eastern, middle and western part of the country.

The second emphasis is pertinence. While coordinating and promoting the various tasks of rural revitalization, it’s important to focus on how to address the shortcomings and strengthen institutional innovation and policy creation, according to MARA.

The project also focuses on effectiveness, urging counties and villages to set up realistic goals based on the characteristics of national conditions and local agricultural conditions.

Last but not least, local governments should pay attention to engagement, according to MARA. They should respect the will of farmers and their main role in carrying out the project and share development results with them.
