Several Chinese LGBT organizations released a joint statement yesterday on the horrific attack that targeted the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, two days ago. This event has been recognised as the worst mass shooting in American history. The gunman, Omar Matten, 29, was later killed in a shootout with the police. The Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the massacre in a statement released over an encrypted phone app, even though the FBI director has said that there is no evidence directly linking Omar Matten to an outside group. Still, the Orlando Attack was clearly directed at the gay community, and Matten’s ex-wife has claimed that Matten had often expressed his intolerance toward homosexuals.
The statement released by the Chinese LGBT groups stresses that every person ought to have freedom from fear and that the lives of others should be respected regardless of their gender and sexuality. Gender minorities should thus always enjoy equal human rights with mainstream groups in society. At the end of the statement, the organizations express their condolences for the victims of the Orlando shooting and condemned the terrorists for attacking the LGBT community. They also encourage people to engage in discussion, change their social media profile photo to pictures expressing solidarity with the victims of the shooting, and share knowledge about gender diversity with friends and family members.
