  • Ocean Negative Emission Scientist Focusses on Climate Goals

During China’s Two Sessions, Jiao Nianzhi, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chief scientist of the International Large-scale Ocean Negative Emission Program, has been actively  promoting an important initiative.

“Ecology” and “low-carbon” were key themes during this year’s  sessions. The government work report proposed strengthening environmental protection and promoting green, low-carbon development while proactively and prudently pursuing  China’s dual carbon goals.

During a joint panel discussion, President Xi Jinping urged environmental representatives to make new contributions to environmental protection and high-quality development. He called for precise, scientific, and law-based pollution control, promoting a green and low-carbon economy, conserving resources, exploring paths to realize the value of ecological products, and steadily advancing carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

Inspired by Xi’s remarks, Jiao emphasized the importance of  negative emission measures  for achieving the dual carbon goals and creating  more room for economic growth.

Years ago, Jiao pioneered the micro-biotic carbon pump theory framework for ocean carbon sequestration. China now leads the International Large-scale Ocean Negative Emission Program, to drive significant  theoretical innovations, technological breakthroughs, and international cooperation on standardized approaches.
