Tragic fire raises stakes for factories
By Qiu Quanlin, China Daily, February 2, 2013
After an arson incident incited by a migrant worker owed wage arrears, China Daily reports that factories have hustled to keep workers satisfied. The disgruntled worker was owed 500 yuan, and on December 4th of last year set fire to an underwear factory in Hunan, killing 14 workers. Liu Haiping, deputy director of the Chaonan district economic and trade bureau, mentioned that recent labor shortages have doubled the pressure on factory managers to supply higher salaries to workers on time.
