Project Introduction

The four-year project started in 2014 under a larger framework led by IIED, aiming to understand the problems and risks faced by Chinese investors in Africa and promote sustainable development that will benefit all the stakeholders through research and policy facilitation. During the project period, GEI successfully held annual learning platform events with IIED and African partners on forest governance, and supported five Chinese journalists to report on Chinese investment in Africa, resulting in published articles about challenges in Africa’s own timber legality and Chinese investment in timber and other related industries. GEI also published two reports on Africa’s timber governance, specifically focusing on export and import regulations in China and African project countries.

African Tech Challenge (ATC)

In Africa, Chinese companies generally face the issue of not finding workers with the necessary skillsets. On the other hand, the local unemployment rate among the young is high, as many cannot find a job. Facing this situation, China House assists Chinese companies to design and execute the social corporate responsibility project “Africa Tech Challenge” (ATC). It offers technical training to the African youth to help them become qualified technicians.

The project's impact:
• After the initial conception by China House, the matured competition is now hosted directly by Chinese enterprises. Until today it has been constantly increasing in scale.

Community-participated Ecosystem Protection and Livelihood Improvement: a Contract-led Protection Model

Myanmar is a hotspot for global biodiversity. But recently, Myanmar has suffered from severe environmental damage, especially deforestation. It is estimated that the deforestation rate in Myanmar has reached 1.73%, ranked third place in the list of countries with the highest deforestation rates. Apart from urbanization, need for agricultural development and infrastructure building, reasons for deforestation also include the need of the 70% of the population who live in rural areas for firewood consumption, as well as illegal cutting of timber. Meanwhile, the general capabilities of environmental protection organisations in Myanmar are quite weak, and they lack good problem-solving paradigms when facing issues of deforestation and community development.

Since 2016, the Global Environmental Institute (GEI) has started conducting programmes on ecosystem protection and community development. We have been promoting a contract protection model along with four partner NGOs in Myanmar to carry out community-centred ecosystem protection and human development programmes in areas with rich biodiversity. At the same time, we have been providing trainings for local NGOs in Myanmar, helping them build up higher abilities of organisation and coordination and capabilities to conduct and manage programmes in the contract protection model.

So far, GEI and local NGOs have expanded our programmes to 27 communities. The areas under our protection have reached 70748.1 acres, and over 200,000 residents have been encouraged to participate in our programmes.

Ethiopia Women Economic Empowerment Program

Through the provision of technical and marketable skills, the Women Economic Empowerment Project contributed to the creation of jobs for Ethiopian women by providing training on traditional handwork techniques.

China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation
