Formerly known as World Society for the Protection of Animals, World Animal Protection (WAP) is an organization created after the merger of two animal cruelty prevention organizations in 1981. Their work in China focuses on several areas, including animals in the wild, animals in farming, animals in communities, animals in disasters, global animal welfare and animal welfare education.
WAP regularly works with relevant government authorities to improve animal welfare in China and heighten public awareness. In 2019, WAP was invited by the Beijing government authorities to participate in a pet dog registration information event and talk to the public about how to properly care for dogs and how to get pets registered. In 2013, WAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare.
In 2018, WAP in China published the first report on animal tourism aimed at young Chinese consumers. Other reports it's published on animal rights in China include a 2016 report on consumer attitudes about pig welfare in the pork industry, which was done in cooperation with the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association.
In addition, WAP shares many infographics and petitions on their WeChat public account in order to spread awareness on animal cruelty and other issues.
