Open-mindedness, respect and tolerance are at the heart of Stiftung Mercatour Foundation's canon of values. The foundation regards itself as a learning organization which seeks out different partners to achieve common goals and which is keen to discover new paths and approaches. Following an analytical, tactical and transparent approach, tackling areas of considerable social need in which we can employ our competencies to achieve impact. Given its focus on defined sociopolitical objectives, the foundation must at the same time remain open to change and to new themes and ideas. Thus an integral part of the foundation’s work involves watching out for new issues and exploring the fringes of its own areas of activity.
China is a country of significant global standing with which Germany can and must cooperate for the benefit of both countries and with a view to resolving global issues. Germany’s relationship with China is often characterized by misperceptions, prejudices and ignorance, however, so deeper mutual understanding is the key to successful cooperation in important areas – without which it will be virtually impossible to overcome global challenges.
Stiftung Mercator’s Beijing Representative Office expresses its desire to engage in intensive exchange and close cooperation between Germany and China. The office in Beijing has been registered as its official representation in China since 2014 and as such constitutes an important part of the foundation’s work in China. Together with the China team in Essen, it completes the institutional framework for achieving our objectives in the field of international relations between Germany, Europe and China.
