Beam International Foundation Limited (“BEAM”) is an independent charity aiming to provide free operations to disadvantaged Chinese children with cleft lips/ cleft palates. BEAM organizes teams of licensed medical professionals and volunteers to travel to rural regions in mainland China to provide surgeries to children with such conditions. The teams include Chinese and international medical professionals that are qualified and licensed. This treatment improves the child’s ability to eat, drink and speak. Headquartered in Hong Kong, it cooperates with hospitals across China. The team recruits both professional and non-professional volunteers.
BEAM also contributes to long-term “capacity building” for medical professionals by providing training in collaboration with Zhejiang university and the Chinese ministry of health. BEAM also provides a program for professionals working on cleft conditions to communicate and exchange experiences. It offers overseas learning opportunities and international missions. The “Sir David Akers-Jones Training Scholarship” also funds plastic surgeons, pediatricians and anesthesiologists.
Their official website provides information for the public on cleft conditions in Chinese and in English. BEAM has also organized and participated in social events in China from 2015-2019. These events are mainly aimed for children and the youth, often having “smile” as a central theme.
