The China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation, supported by Renmin University of China (RUC), was officially established on July the 26th. Over 100 representatives from the government sector, philanthropy circles, schools, enterprises and the media attended the launching ceremony. During the event Professor Kang Xiaoguang, director of the institute, introduced its overview and strategic planning. Mr. Li Xiaobo, an alumni of the university, donated 10,000,000 yuan especially to support the establishment and development of the institute.
The China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation will have philanthropic culture, cross-sector cooperation, and philanthropic administration as its main research targets, hoping to lead philanthropic research and promote philanthropic innovation through academic research, personnel training, practice consultancy, social advocacy, and decision-making participation.
The major academic and administrative affairs of the institute will be determined through the council, and two directors will take responsibility under the council’s lead. Xu Yongguang, the chairman of the Narada Foundation and vice president of the China Charity Alliance, will act as the honorary chairman of the China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation; Zhang Jianming, the standing vice secretary of the party committee of RUC, will act as chairman; Kang Xiaoguang, professor of the Public Administration College and director of the NGO Research Center of RUC, will be the director; and Guo Chao, vice professor of Social Policy and Practice Collage from the University of Pennsylvania, will be the international director.
The China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation is the fourth philanthropic research institute in China, the other three ones being the China Philanthropy Research Institute of Beijing Normal University, the School of Philanthropy of Sun Yat-Sen University, and the China Institute for Philanthropy of Tsinghua University.
