Three HIV carriers who wanted to fly from Shenyang to Shijiazhuang were denied access to the plane by staff from Chunqiu airlines on the ground that “the company rules forbid [us] from boarding AIDS infected passengers”.
According to the journalist, other companies do not have these kind of regulations, nor do other means of transportation such as train or subway. The three HIV carriers decided to sue the company because it has not provided them with formal apologies nor compensation and also in order to raise awareness on the fact that HIV carriers are still heavily discriminated in China.
According to Cheng Yan, director of the Beijing Yirenping Center “In China, the rights of HIV carriers are often violated because of conflicting legislation on the issue. The government and big companies should take the lead in fighting discriminations against HIV carriers in order to influence society as a whole.”
