On the invitation of China’s first lady Peng Liyuan, Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has signed a cooperation agreement with China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission on behalf of her foundation. The agreement was signed in Beijing during the opening ceremony of the summer camp “Love in the Sun”, on July 23, 2017. The goal of the agreement is to promote efforts for poverty reduction and HIV/AIDS intervention in China, and the two parties will carry out a pilot project in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province. The cooperation aims to support China’s strategy of targeted poverty alleviation and the Healthy China 2030 plan, a blueprint approved by the government in 2016 that sets five goals to improve the level of health nationwide.
While in China, Melinda Gates also met with many government enterprises and philanthropic communities, discussed the challenges in the process of dealing with health issues in China, and expressed admiration for the successes that China has achieved so far.
