  • Little Porpoise, Big Love: A Joint Conservation Journey

Since its establishment, the Environmental Grantmakers Network (CEGA) has been actively fostering collaboration and development among environmental funders. It plays a leading role in shaping the direction of environmental funding and is dedicated to maximizing the social impact of philanthropic funds in the environmental sector. One of its key initiatives is the case exchange activity, with today’s featured project being “Little Porpoise, Big Love.”

This project, proposed by the Hubei Changjiang Conservation Foundation (CCF), has been running from January 2017 to December 2024, providing financial support to multiple NGOs working on the conservation of Yangtze finless porpoise. Guided by a philosophy that prioritize the comprehensive protection of the Yangtze River, CCF has invested approximately 10 million RMB to support over 60 NGOs across the Yangtze River basin, enabling more than 90 conservation initiatives. These initiatives range from visual storytelling, such as animated films and the development of cultural and creative product, to scientific research, all aimed at raising awareness about flagship species like the Yangtze finless porpoise.

CCF employs a top-down approach to foster collaborative relationships with various stakeholders. In addition, the foundation has organized over 1,000 nature education activities, successfully engaging more than 500,000 participants in the conservation movement. This approach has not only heightened public awareness and interest in the conservation of Yangtze finless porpoises but has also established a unique platform for environmental education related to Yangtze River. Furthermore, it has explored a new model of ecological conservation based on public participation and collaborative governance.

Through this project, CCF utilizes venture philanthropy to provide financial support to participating public welfare partners. The project also organizes training activities, such as the Yangtze Partner Camp and various workshops, to continuously improve the self-sufficiency of its partners, support their growth, and foster sustainable development.
