April saw roughly 40 large donations of 10 million yuan ($1.5 milllion) or more from enterprises and individuals, totaling more than 1.22 billion yuan in total, according to the China Philanthropy Times.
Of the four grand donations (100 million yuan and above), three went to the education sector and one went to healthcare. The largest donation came from the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group and was given to the Education Foundation of Beijing Sports University to support the training of the country’s top athletes.
Donations ranging from 50 to 100 million yuan included one monetary donation to set up a new elementary school in Guangzhou and three supply donations, mainly to Shanghai for the city’s battle against a new surge of Covid cases.
Three quarters of the 32 large donations ranging from 10 to 50 million yuan, which reached a total of approximately 576.85 million yuan, were spent on China’s Covid prevention and control measures put in place across various provinces and cities. The remaining eight were given to educational causes, mainly to school foundations.
The number and total amount of large donations in April did not change much compared to the previous month, but the overall distribution showed a more balanced pattern. Covid prevention and control (47 percent) and education (45 percent) continued to be the major destinations for the country’s large donations.
