Woman wins settlement in discrimination case

By Yang Yao and Chen Xin, China Daily, February 1, 2013

Guangzhou labor authorities recently awarded RMB 601 for a case concerning gender discrimination in hiring practices. While a 2005 regulation stipulates that employers who violate anti-gender discrimination law are subject to penalties, the nature of the penalty is not specified, leaving the precise measures up to local government. In Shenzhen, a recently enacted regulation states that employers found to have discriminated in their recruitment practices will be fined up to RMB 30,000, and Hubei lawyers are currently working on drafting more precise regulations. In this case, the company posted an apology on its website, and paid RMB 600 in compensation for legal fees, and RMB 1 for mental anguish.
