Tang Hui, the long suffering mother who is seeking compensation for the 18 months that she spent in a labor camp after protesting the rape of her young daughter, has stated that she will continue to seek redress after the Yongzhou Intermediate People’s Court rejected her case. Despite the rebuttal of Tang’s request for RMB 2,460 in compensation and a written note of apology, Tang responded that she will take the case to the provincial court in 15 days. Tang is the second victim of the re-education through labor or laojiao system to seek compensation, but both cases have failed to make any headway with the controversial system, which has been criticized because it does not utilize the normal legal processes in sentencing inmates.
