On April 26, ByteDance (a Chinese tech company whose products include the Toutiao (今日头条) and TickTok (抖音) apps, which have won great popularity), announced an additional donation of 30 million yuan to the China Red Cross Foundation ByteDance Medical Workers Humanitarian Relief Fund (中国红十字基金会字节跳动医务工作者人道救助基金). The total medical aid fund now amounts to 436 million yuan.
The ByteDance Medical Relief Fund was established on January 25, 2020 by Byte Beat donating 200 million yuan to the China Red Cross Foundation. In February the fund donated an addition 50 million, and this week’s donation represent a second addition. The reason for the further donation is that funding applications submitted by medical personnel on the frontline of the epidemic are still being received, even though the situation within China has gradually improved.
According to the fund, as of April 24, 2020, 3437 frontline medical workers have received funding from the ByteDance Medical Assistance Fund. Among them, 3,383 infected medical workers received 100,000 yuan each; 54 deceased medical workers’ families received 1 million yuan each. The ByteDance Medical Assistance Fund is currently still open for applications.
