Introduction

IFAW Works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animas, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. We seek to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was founded in 1969 to end the cruel commercial slaughter of seals in Canada. We have grown to become one of the most influential animal welfare organizations in the world. Today, IFAW has offices in 16 countries and staff of more than 200 experienced campaigners, legal and political experts and internationally acclaimed scientists. IFAW’s value and action are joined by more than 2.5 million supporters all over the world.

IFAW believes in the intrinsic values of animals and that people have a responsibility to protect and care for individual animals and their population from suffering and unnecessary exploitation. IFAW Works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animas, protecting wildlife and their habitats, and assisting animals in distress and crisis. We seek to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

Since IFAW began operating in China in 1994, the organization has been working closely with government agencies, local NGOs, scientific research institutes and business sectors by providing technical and material support to protect and improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals. Since the first project of protecting Asiatic black bears, IFAW’s programs in China have expanded to include: save Tibetan antelopes from poaching and illicit trade; protect Asian elephant by mitigating human-elephant conflict; rescue, rehabilitate and release birds of prey to the wild; protect tigers, elephants and seals from commercial exploitation and trade by promoting international conventions, enforcing domestic wildlife protection laws and improving wildlife trade policies; and help companion animals through fostering animal guardianship and regulations. IFAW also timely responds to the needs of animals in man-made and natural disasters. IFAW China’s educators work in 19 provinces in China to cultivate the younger generation to become animal welfare and conservation champions.
