The Education and Science Society was registered in the United States in 1980 as a nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting understanding between the people of the US and China, and to promote development in rural China by improving education quality and raising literacy levels. Goals include supporting education in rural China, raising the quality of rural school education, and ensuring that rural children have equal opportunities to receive education.
ESS has no paid staff and is run by volunteers.
Programs include:
Support Education in Rural China (SERC) program series. This program has three major themes: providing reading and informational materials to rural schools, improving rural schools' quality of teaching and learning, and providing financial assistance.
Rural Youth Scholarship. This program began in 1997 by providing financial aid to elementary and middle school students, and has expanded to include high school students and students with disabilities. In 2016, 1107 students received financial aid.
Adopt a Rural School Library. This program promotes the concept of a library corner in school classrooms, instead of focusing on school libraries. Donated books for library corners were sent to 66 schools across China.
