As of Dec 31, 2022, 678 representative offices of foreign NGOs have been officially registered in China.
Among them, the majority (155) are headquartered in the United States, followed by Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and the UK. The top five countries account for 60 percent of foreign-headquartered NGOs.
Around half of the 678 NGOs are registered in Beijing and Shanghai. The most popular area for foreign NGOs to focus on is economic development, followed by education, disaster relief, healthcare, and environmental protection.
Forty percent of NGOs conduct activities around China, while 31 percent only operate within one province.
