OISCA-International contributes to Humanity’s environmentally sustainable development through a holistic approach emphasizing the interconnectedness of agriculture, ecological integrity, and the human spirit. To accomplish this, we implement and advocate hands-on experiential programs for world citizens of all ages, transmitting knowledge and skills, and cultivating such spiritual qualities as dedication, self-reliance, and universal brother-sisterhood.”
Established in Tokyo in 1961, this was at first known as the International Organisation for Cultivating Universal Human Spirit. It changed its name in 1965 to the Organisation for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement, OISCA.OISCA recently established a School of Agricultural Technology in Shanghai’s Communications University (Shanghai Jiaotong Daxue). It is also involved in a reforestation project in Hubei where Japanese volunteers have planted 350 hectares of trees in an area damaged by heavy flooding.OISCA International also works in Hong Kong, where a local chapter of the organisation has been established. Since 2001, the Japanese and Hong Kong groups have organised tree-planting programmes in collaboration with the Hong Kong Natural Resource Protection Office.
Current OISCA initiatives include: The Reforestation Project in Guiyang, Guizhou, and the Wenchang Seashore Protection Project in Hainan Province. OISCA is also focused on Alashan Income Generating Projects, which address the desertification problem and needs of the Alashan farmers. The Project encourages the involvement of local farmers by adopting a technique of planting Cistanche deserticola, a valuable medicinal plant, into the roots of sousou, a local plant growing in the desert of Alashan. Unsustainable collection of C. deserticola resulted in the decline of sousou and hence triggered the desertification problem in the region.
