Introduction

The Keswick Foundation (KF) is a charitable organisation established in 1979 by Sir John Keswick and his daughter, Maggie Keswick Jencks.

Sir John was the Chairman of Jardine Matheson Ltd from 1952 to 1956. He spent much of his life in China and Hong Kong where he developed a deep regard for all things Chinese. As part of his legacy, Sir John wanted to give something back. This desire resulted in the setting up of KF.

From the very beginning, Sir John wanted KF to focus on those aspects of social welfare that were overlooked by most other organisations and decided on mental health services. He saw a gap in funding of recurring costs – most other organisations covered only capital costs.

After the death of her father in 1982, Maggie Keswick Jencks continued to support social welfare in Hong Kong and mainland China with the same degree of commitment. Maggie had lived in Hong Kong and mainland China as a child and shared Sir John’s love for both places. With excellent organisational skills and great enthusiasm she brought inspiration and direction to the Foundation. Under her guidance, KF extended its work significantly. Sadly, Maggie died of cancer in 1995.

Today, KF is managed by a team of dedicated volunteers and professionals who are committed to the vision set forth by Sir John and Maggie.
