Introduction

To relieve the hardship, distress and sickness of orphaned and abandoned children in Asia through the development of family-based care as an alternative to institutional care.

Goals

Care for Children has a ‘vision for a million children’ in China.

Major Projects

  • In 1998, Care for Children pioneered family placement care (long-term foster care), an alternative to institutional care for orphaned and abandoned children in China. By working in partnership with the Chinese government, Care for Children trains national and local staff to launch and then manage family placement programmes in their local communities.
  • Recent training developments have included Special Education Needs (SEN) and physiotherapy support to ensure all children have the opportunity to be placed into a local family.

Major Achievements

It is a remarkably successful project that has trained over 4000 local staff from 250 orphanages across 27 provinces throughout China. An estimated 250,000 (2011) orphans have been moved into local families.
