Introduction

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy is an international NGO that works to provide design and implement high quality transport systems and policy solutions that make cities more livable, equitable, and sustainable.

ITDP China faces unique challenges as Chinese private automobile ownership continues to grow and current urban planning is often automobile-oriented. At the same time, Chinese urban development will have large implications on the rest of the world. ITDP China works to promote mass transit and non-motorized transportation and believes that sustainable and equitable transportation is at the core of development that can solve China's social and environmental problems.

Achievements in China

  • Playing a lead role in planning, designing and implementing the Guangzhou and Yichang Bus Rapid Transit
  • Contributing to Guangzhou’s new vehicle registration restrictions scheme
  • Playing a major role in Yichang bike sharing system planning and implementation
  • A strong involvement in the urban design along Yichang Bus Rapid Transit corridor
  • Supporting the planning and design of greenways in Guangzhou and other cities
  • Leading the planning, design, and implementation of the Lanzhou Bus Rapid Transit
  • Playing a lead role in Lanzhou’s new parking policy
  • Promoting information sharing & best practices dissemination on Bus Rapid Transit (chinabrt.org) and bike sharing (publicbike.net) in China
  • Spreading best practices to other cities to planning major transit-oriented development projects

Current Projects

  • Leading planning and design for upcoming transit-oriented development projects in Chinese cities
  • Contributing to the planning and design of Tianjin and other cities’ Bus Rapid Transit
  • Leading efforts in ongoing parking reforms in several Chinese cities
  • Providing significant contributions to greenway planning and design in several cities
  • Spreading best practices across the region through key design and advisory roles in Bus Rapid Transit, greenways, parking and bike sharing planning

ITDP China also runs a BRT DATABASE of all BRT projects in China, BIKE DATABASE of bike share programs throughout the country, and runs the China Site Visit Program (here).

ITDP China works in twelve cities in China: Beijing, Dongguan, Nanning, Harbin, Dandong, Guiyang, Wuhan, Jiuquan, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Lanzhou and Yichang. In addition, ITDP China also works with other Asian cities, including Vientiane, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Ulaanbaatar.
