Introduction

FSC shall promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management.

FSC is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide.

FSC was established in1993, as a follow-up to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro, 1992) with the mission to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.

FSC applies the directives of its multi-stakeholder membership to develop Forest Management (FM) and Chain of Custody (CoC) standards, and engage a global network of committed businesses, organizations and communities through the world’s leading forest management certification and labeling scheme.

FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.

FSC is nationally represented in more than 85 countries around the world. FSC has more than 800 members in 89 countries.
200 million hectares of forest area certified according to FSC standards and more than 35,000 companies have FSC Chain of Custody certificates in 122 countries.

In 1999, the first FSC Chain of Custody certificate was issued in China. In China, 1 million hectares of forest are certified and more than 6000 companies FSC Chain of Custody certified in Mainland and Hong Kong.
