Holt International Children’s Services is dedicated to carrying out God’s plan for every child to have a permanent, loving home through family preservation, in-country adoption, and international adoption.
Holt International Children’s Services was founded in 1959 by an American couple who adopted eight Korean War orphans in addition to their own six children. This non- profit organisation has since become the world’s largest inter-country adoption agency.
Each year, Holt helps approximately 300 American families to adopt Chinese children from every province of China except the TAR. In addition to facilitating adoptions, Holt International Foundation - China cooperates with orphanages to improve care for the children who remain there. The organisation operates foster care and group home projects in more than 15 local areas in Guangxi, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Hebei and Jilin provinces. The foster programmes provide both short-term childcare and longer-term care for children with disabilities, while the group homes provide a family-like environment for orphans for whom traditional foster care might not be possible. Holt also cooperates with the Ministry of Civil Affairs as well as provincial and local governments in Guangxi, Shanxi, Yunnan, and Fujian provinces to assist children at risk of homelessness by providing educational and nutritional support. Holt has also trained orphanage staff and provides medical, financial and other supports to orphanage children with special needs.
Holt International’s funding comes mainly from fees charged for adoption services as well as donations for child welfare projects.
