Introduction

Pacific Environment protects the living environment of the Pacific Rim by strengthening democracy, supporting grassroots activism, empowering communities, and redefining international policies.

This California based environmental advocacy organization was established in 1987 and began by supporting grassroots environmental organizations working to protect the Siberia taiga and the Russian Far East.

In China, Pacific Environment provides direct support to activists who are spearheading the environmental movement. It manages a grant-making program for the Global Greengrants Fund that currently supports around 30 Chinese NGOs working on habitat and watershed protection, illegal logging, marine conservation, and land use issues.

Pacific Environment also promotes capacity building and networking among Chinese environmental NGOs. In 2002 it organized one of the largest NGO conferences on marine conservation in Chinese history, and in 2004 it created a 'Save China's Seas' network.
Pacific Environment is funded by grants from foundations and donations from individual supporters.
Internship opportunities only available as posted. Check website for information.

By providing small grants, strategic guidance and capacity-building support to dozens of Chinese grassroots groups, Pacific Environment is working to strengthen China’s homegrown environmental movement. We partner with Chinese activists, students, journalists and citizens to work on several critical environmental issues, including water pollution, marine conservation, and wildlife trade.

Subgranting – Each one of our grants provides our partners with the resources to operate as a professional NGO with office space, sustainable wages for its qualified staff and to develop environmental projects with measurable goals and results.

Annual Water Pollution Meeting – Every year, we team up with a local partner to host a Water Pollution Meeting for our network of partners and allies to build partnerships and share strategies.

Strategic Guidance – During field visits, we provide on-site training and guidance to our partners on organizational issues ranging from strategic planning for the organization, project evaluation to staff development.

International Exchanges – We organize people-to-people exchanges for emerging leaders of Chinese NGOs to visit countries like the U.S and meet with foreign NGOs, foundations and governmental agencies to share their experiences in environmental campaigns.
