To protect rivers and defend the rights of communities that depend on them. To promote water and energy solutions for a just and sustainable world.
International Rivers was founded in 1985 with a vision to develop a worldwide network of people working to protect rivers and promote just and sustainable water and energy development.
International Rivers China's program works to highlight the impacts of Chinese corporations and financial institutions on the world's rivers. Within China, International Rivers works with the Chinese river protection movement to support their calls for a cautious approach to development that balances economic growth and environmental protection, and demanding more transparent and participatory planning processes around hydropower development. International Rivers' China program also provides information about China's role in global dam building, supports groups in countries affected by Chinese investments and projects, and fosters a dialogue within China about the responsibilities of Chinese corporations and financial institutions overseas.
International Rivers’ funding comes from membership fees and donations from supporters, and grants from foundations.
