Introduction

To release the potential of individuals and institutions in China to advance their own communities, with a special emphasis on women and youth living in rural areas.

The Badi Foundation is a non-governmental development organization dedicated to releasing the potential of individuals and institutions in China to advance their own communities. The Badi Foundation facilitates the establishment of community-based organizations and program groups, partnering with them to design and implement education and training programs, and building their capacity to collaborate with government to promote balanced development. The Badi Foundation's programs place a special emphasis on building the capacity of women and youth living in China’s rural areas.

The Badi Foundation was established in Macau in 1990, where it is registered as a non-profit charitable organization. The foundation established a representative office in Beijing, registered under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of the People’s Republic of China in1997. Under the guidance of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the Badi Foundation has worked with a wide variety of government agencies, NGOs and academic institutions in China, including national, provincial and local Poverty Alleviation Offices, provincial and local Women’s Federations, and the China Association for NGO Cooperation. The foundation has also collaborated with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations World Food Programme, and UNICEF in our efforts in China. In January 2011 the Badi Foundation and China Charity Federation entered into a 10 year collaboration agreement establishing the “China Charity Federation Badi Community Development Fund” to support non-profit organizations and projects in China that build the capacity of individuals and institutions in rural areas to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities.

At the core of the Badi Foundation's approach to development is a recognition of the importance of developing both individual and institutional capacity to build harmonious and prosperous communities. The foundation's primary programs in China seeking to build capacity in individuals and institutions are the Junior Youth Empowerment Program, Environmental Action Program for rural women, and Institutional Capacity Building Program for community-based organizations and program groups. The Badi Foundation is also striving to learn how institutions of formal education can contribute to balanced development. To this end, the School of the Nations, the foundation's internationally-oriented school in Macau, promotes the intellectual, moral and physical development of its students in an integrated manner, with the goal of equipping them with the capabilities needed to make a meaningful and enduring contribution to society.

The Badi Foundation is working with over 20 community-based organizations and program groups, which are implementing the Junior Youth Empowerment Program and Environmental Action Program in Gansu, Guangdong, Hebei, Hunan, Ningxia, Sha'anxi, Shanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces. The aim of the Junior Youth Empowerment Program is to release the potential of youth between the ages of 12 and 15 to contribute to the development of their communities through enhancing their powers of expression in the English language and developing their moral capacities, including their ability to design and implement projects to serve their communities. The Badi Foundation also implements the Junior Youth Empowerment Program at the School of the Nations and in collaboration with a number of local schools in Macau. The Environmental Action Program builds capacity in rural women to participate in the development of their communities through understanding and applying scientific concepts of sustainable development, while also building confidence and transforming mindsets. The Badi Foundation assists the community-based organizations and program groups to implement these programs, while also building their institutional capacity through the foundation’s Institutional Capacity Building Program. The Badi Foundation also provides funding to the community-based organizations and program groups to sustain their operations.

The Badi Foundation has an initial endowment, and receives funding from a variety of sources including international donor agencies, corporations, and individuals.
